Definizione

German authorities established a concentration camp for men and women in the state of Prussia in the province of Hesse-Nassau in the district of Witzenhausen. According to camp documents and former prisoners' statements, the camp was opened not later than on August 1, 1944 and it was evacuated to the town of Wurtz on March 29, 1945. The prisoners were forced to work in dangerous chemical and explosive material work for a subsidiary of Dynamit AG Nobel (DAG) and for the Röder Company. Reports show that approximately 150 prisoners were killed as a result of explosions. Other companies that used forced labor from this camp population were DAG-Hessich Lichtenau, Foehren, Zigarrenfabrik, and Fabrik Hessich-Lichtenau der GmbH zur Verwertung Chemische-Erzeugnisse. The documentation shows that the total manpower in the camp consisted of approximately 3055 female and 4055 male prisoners. (en-US)
