Definition: Deportations begin in March; in response, Jews scatter to thousands of rural hiding places. As of June 7, Jews must wear the yellow star. In November, Italy occupies Vichy east of the Rhone, where Jews remain protected. Germany occupies the remainder of Vichy, but the Vichy regime remains formally in charge. (en-US)
