Location: Southern Asia, bordered in 2000 by the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal), Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, and Myanmar. Capital city: New Delhi History: India gained independence from Britain on August 15, 1947, as the Republic of India, referred to as Bharat in the Indian constitution. Pakistan was partitioned from India as a separate Muslim state. After the war, India struggled with economic underdevelopment, overpopulation, and conflicts with Pakistan and China.
