Location: Western South America facing the Pacific Ocean, bordered in 2000 by Colombia and Peru.
Capital city: Quito
History:
Part of the ancient Incan empire, the area of Ecuador was colonized by Spain in the 16th century. Ecuador achieved its independence from Spain under Antonio José de Sucre in 1822. In the same year, Ecuador was joined to the Gran Colombia (Greater Colombia) federation by Simon Bolívar until the federation's dissolution in 1830. The 19th century was marked by rivalries between conservatives and liberals and disputes with Peru over the eastern frontier. In the 20th century, governments changed frequently, often backed by military juntas. (en-US)
