Location: The independent Vatican City State lies in the northwestern section of Rome in Italy.
History:
The world's smallest sovereign state, it is the residence of the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. After the unification of the Italian states, the Pope and government were at odds over who should administer the Papal States. The Vatican State became independent of Italy as a result of the Lateran Treaty on February 11, 1929. It remained neutral during WWII under the leadership of Pope Pius XII. (en-US)
