Born on March 24, 1874, in Carrù, Italy, Luigi Einaudi was an Italian economist, politician, and first president of the postwar Republic of Italy. Before the war, Einaudi was a member of the Italian Senate, and edited an economic journal. He advocated a liberal economic policy and criticized the Fascist regime, leading to the suppression of his publication. In 1943, Einaudi fled to Switzerland. He returned to Italy at the end of the war and served in various government posts, including economic minister. From May 1948 to 1955, Einaudi served as the first president of the Republic of Italy. After his term, he wrote studies on economics and government until his death in Rome on October 30, 1961. (en-US)
