Definizione

(Hebrew-Youth for Illegal Immigration) Underground organization founded in 1937 to aid Jews who were attempting to immigrate to Palestine without the approval of the British Mandate authorities. Created by the Haganah in 1939, the Paris-based Mossad le Aliyah Bet Agency used personnel from Hehalutz and Zionist movement representatives in Palestine to organize and assist illegal immigration to Palestine. At the outbreak of World War II, Mossad almost completely ceased operations but in response to a British mandate eliminating the immigration quota for six months, Mossad regrouped for secret illegal immigration operations in fall 1939. The Zionist Organization, as well as the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and various elements within the Zionist movement in the United States, supported Mossad. In 1951, three years after the creation of the State of Israel, the Mossad was reconstituted as an organization. Mossad serves as one of Israel's most important intelligence organizations, carrying out espionage, intelligence, and covert operations under the authority of the Prime Minister. In addition, Mossad has assisted in the capture of former Nazis. (en-US)
