Scarlet fever was an infectious disease caused by streptococcal bacteria. First described by English physician Thomas Sydenham in 1676, scarlet fever was detected by symptoms such as red rash on the skin, fever, sore throat, swollen glands, and peeling of the skin affected by the rash. Complications could include infections and nephritis. In the twentieth century, penicillin was used to treat scarlet fever in addition to bed rest and fluid consumption. After the 1950s, cases of scarlet fever declined rapidly. (en-US)
