Definizione

Born in Fiume, Austria-Hungary, János Kádár (1912-1989) was the premier of Hungary from 1956 to 1958 and from 1961 to 1965, and was first secretary of the Hungarian Communist Part from 1956 to 1988. Kádár joined the illegal Communist Party in 1931 and became a member of the Central Committee in 1942. He was expelled from the party and imprisoned from 1951 to 1953 for differences with the Stalinists but was rehabilitated in 1954. Once aligned with the anti-Stalinist policies of Imre Nagy which led to the Hungarian revolution in 1956, Kádár left Nagy to form a pro-Soviet coalition, at first instituting repressive actions to stop further revolt. Afterwards, his administration instituted a more liberal program of Communism and gained a measure of independence from the USSR. During his era, Hungary became the most economically advanced nation in the Soviet bloc and academic and popular interest in the history of the Holocaust in Hungary increased. (en-US)
