Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) was a Spanish poet, playwright, and musician. Born in Fuente Vaqueros, García Lorca was educated at the University of Granada and established himself at the residence of scholars associated with the University of Madrid. His poetry was established through oral transmission before the publication of his most famous work, Gypsy Ballads, in 1928 which brought him international fame. From 1932 to 1935 García Lorca was the director of La Barraca, a theater group subsidized by the Republican government. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, García Lorca fled Madrid and was assassinated by Nationalist soldiers in Granada. Another book of poems, Poet in New York, was published posthumously in 1940. (en-US)
