Kappler, Herbert CercaDefinizione
Herbert Kappler (1907-1978) was a member of the SS who acted as the head of the SD (Sicherheitsdienst) in Rome, Italy, during the war and subsequent German occupation. After September 1943, Kappler organized the rescue of Mussolini by SS commandos. He also organized the October 15-16 1943 mass round up, extortion, and deportation of approximately 1,000 Jews from Rome to Auschwitz. On March 23, 1944, Kappler was involved in the Ardeatine Caves Massacre which resulted in the deaths of 335 Italian men and youths. Immediately after the war he was detained by the British and turned over to an Italian military tribunal for trial in 1948. He received a sentence of life imprisonment but escaped to West Germany in 1978. (en-US)
