The trial of former SS/SD officer Herbert Kappler took place in Rome, Italy, in 1948. He was tried by an Italian military tribunal for his organization of the extortion and deportation of approximately 1,000 Jews from Rome in 1943 and for his involvement in the Ardeatine Caves Massacre in 1944. Kappler was sentenced to life imprisonment in Gaeta. In 1977, he fell ill and was moved to a hospital in Rome. He managed to escape to West Germany where he died in 1978. (en-US)
