Teglio, Massimo CercaDefinizione
Massimo Teglio was an aviator from a Jewish family in Genoa, Italy. Before the war he worked for the family business and founded the Genoa Aviation Club. Teglio became friends with Italo Balbo, the fascist leader who opposed the racial laws. His Catholic wife perished in the massive bombing of Genoa in 1942. After September 1943, Teglio placed his daughter in hiding and remained in Genoa living under a false identity. Because he had the lists of members of the local synagogue, Teglio was able to rescue other Jews from a roundup by the Germans by telephoning them in advance. He then worked with Cardinal Boetto and Don Repetto in the underground Delasem office in Genoa, helping other Jews by providing them with hiding places, false documents, ration cards, and escape routes. After Repetto went into hiding, Teglio became head of Delasem in Genoa. Teglio and his daughter survived the war. (en-US)
