After the September 1943 Armistice, approximately 20,000 Italians from the Fascist militia that had been part of the regular Italian army joined SS units formed by the Germans. The Italian SS personnel were in military and police units employed in the capture of partisans, the roundup of Jews, and executions. The Waffen-Grenadier-Brigade, first created in 1944 and led by Pietro Mannelli and Peter Hansen, was a Waffen SS combat unit that briefly took part in the military action on the front in Anzio.
