Definizione

Rodolfo Graziani (1882-1955) was an Italian Fascist colonial governor, Army Chief of Staff, and the defense minister of Mussolini's Italian Social Republic. In 1930, Graziani became the vice-governor of the Cyrenaica region of Libya and became known for his brutality against the local population. During Italy's campaign against Ethiopia (1935 -1936), Graziani's aggressive measures earned him the viceroyship. He launched a program of brutality against the Ethiopians through incarceration and mass executions but failed to eliminate all resistance and was replaced as viceroy by the Duke of Aosta. In October 1939, Graziani was appointed Army Chief of Staff. He was placed in command of the Libyan front but failed to hold back the British counteroffensive of December 1940. In September 1943, Graziani became defense minister and chief of staff of the Italian Social Republic. After the war, he served a prison sentence and then became a figurehead for the neo-Fascist movement. (en-US)
