Brigate Internazionali CercaDefinizione
The International Brigades were groups of foreign volunteers who fought on the side of the Republicans against Franco's Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Communist in orientation, the members of the brigades represented 50 countries with the majority from Europe and the US, with approximately 3,000 to 5, 000 Jewish volunteers. Altogether there were seven brigades divided into battalions by nationality. The Comintern (Communist International) organized and directed the Brigades from its office in Paris, France. When the USSR began to lessen its support of the Republicans, the volunteers withdrew from the war in 1938. (en-US)
