Pertini, Sandro CercaDefinizione
Born in 1896, Sandro Pertini was a lawyer, socialist, and active antifascist in Italy before the war. He fled from Italy to France to escape arrest by the Fascist police in 1926 and when he returned to Italy, was placed under enforced residence. In 1943 he became vice-secretary of the Partito Socialista Italiano di Unita Proletaria (PSIUP). He was arrested by the Germans in October 1943 and placed in the Via Tasso and Regina Coeli prisons in Rome. He escaped from Regina Coeli with the help of other members of the PSIUP in January 1944. He was president of Italy from 1978 to 1985. (en-US)
