Definizione

Born in Livorno, Italy, in 1903, Count Galeazzo Ciano di Coretellazo was a statesman and diplomat during the Fascist era. Ciano participated in the March on Rome in October 1922 and married Mussolini's daughter Edda in 1930. He was a member of the Fascist Grand Council and became foreign minister in 1936. At first adopting a neutral stance when the war began in 1939, Ciano then supported Italy's entrance into the war in 1940 after the fall of France but after the Axis defeats in 1942 he pursued a separate peace with the Allies. In July 1943 Ciano and other members of the Grand Council forced Mussolini to resign from power. Mussolini then ordered his supporters in northern Italy to capture him. Ciano was put on trial, charged with treason, and executed in Verona on January 11, 1944. (en-US)
