Starace, Achille CercaDefinizione
Achille Starace (1889-1945) was an early Fascist leader from Gallipoli, Italy, and served as the secretary of the Fascist Party (PNF) from 1931 to 1939. In this period, called the "Starace era," he popularized Fascism through public rituals, demonstrations, rallies, sports programs, and through introducing Fascist and military symbolism in everyday life, such as the Fascist salute. His policies became known as "la stile fascista" the Fascist style, and helped to sustain Mussolini's image as Il Duce. Due to public and party criticism, he was dismissed from his post in October 1939 and served as the chief of staff of the militia (MVSN) and on the fronts in Greece and Albania. After the September 8, 1943 Armistice, he fled to German-occupied northern Italy and tried to resume leadership in Mussolini's Social Republic. On April 28, 1945, Starace was captured by partisans in Milan and executed. His body was displayed with Mussolini's in the Pizza Loreto. (en-US)
