Balbo, Italo CercaDefinizione
Italy Balbo (1896-1940) was a Fascist leader from Ferrara, Italy. An early member of Mussolini's Fascist movement, Balbo participated in the March on Rome in October 1922. He became Mussolini's air marshal in 1933 and became well-known for his development of Italy's military and commercial aviation program. Although a long-time Fascist, Balbo was pro-British and also spoke out against the racial legislation of 1938, arguing for the recognition of Jewish war veterans and the readmission of Jewish children to public schools. He was then appointed governor of Libya. During a flight in 1940 his plane was not recognized and was shot down by Italian forces near Tobruk. (en-US)
