Israel Zolli was the chief rabbi of Rome from 1940 to September 1943. Before the war he had been a rabbi in Trieste. After the Italian armistice of September 1943, Rabbi Zolli found refuge in the Vatican City but did not maintain contact with the Jewish community in Rome. After the war he converted to Catholicism.
