Writer, editor, and survivor Giorgio Bassani was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1916. He spent most of his life in Ferrara, where he also taught at a Jewish school during the war. His writings focus on the Jewish community of Ferrara and his best-known 1962 novel Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini (The Garden of the Finzi-Continis) also made into a film in 1971, describes the fates of 2 Jewish families in the Holocaust.
