Definizione

As the Soviets advanced through Poland in October 1944, the Germans closed the Plaszow concentration camp and its subcamps, which included Oskar Schindler's enamelware factory in Zablocie. Schindler was given permission to relocate the factory and the Jewish prisoners who worked for him to Brünnlitz, Czechoslovakia. His main assistant, Isaac Stern, along with others such as Mietek Pemper, compiled lists of names of over 1,000 Jewish men and women from Zablocie and Krakau-Plaszow to be transferred to Brünnlitz. The men were taken via Gross Rosen to the Brünnlitz camp. The 300 women on the list were transferred to Auschwitz where Schindler with the help of his assistant was able to have them released and transferred to the Brünnlitz camp as well. There were also subsequent lists of prisoners at the Brünnlitz camp compiled in 1945. The book Schindler's List, written by Thomas Keneally, and the movie Schindler's List directed by Steven Spielberg, made public the history of the "Schindler Jews". For his efforts, Yad Vashem recognized Schindler as Righteous Among the Nations in 1962. (en-US)
