Definizione

In March 1934, Jewish members of the Justice and Liberty movement are arrested for anti-Fascist activities in the town of Ponte Tresa, marking a turning point in the Fascist government's attitudes towards Jews. After the successful invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, the Fascist government becomes increasingly antisemitic as the alliance with Nazi Germany becomes stronger. The Italian press launches an anti-Jewish campaign culminating in the July 1938 publication of the Manifesto degli scienziati razzisti, (Manifesto of the Racial Scientists) an antisemtic manifesto stating that Jews did not belong in an "Aryan" Italy. In October 1938, the "Berlin-Rome Axis" is created to support Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War, thus founding the future major alliance of World War II. Anti-Jewish measures are first issued in September 1938, denying Jews the right to study or teach in schools, and calling for the deportation of foreign Jews who had moved to Italy after WWI.
