The fascist Italian government, although in political and ideological alliance with nazi Germany, does not materially interfere with the life of the Italian Jews until late in the year 1937. Official anti-Semitic propaganda intensifies in 1938, first with the publication of the Manifesto degli scienziati razzisti (Manifesto of the Racial Scientists) on July 14, 1938, and shortly thereafter in August 1938 when the newspaper Difesa della razza prints pieces with vicious anti-Jewish themes. In October 1938 the Fascist Party establishes the official lines for anti-Jewish legislation, and such legislation is passed on November 17, 1938. During this time a large number of Italian Jews, 3,910 recorded cases, convert to Christianity, hoping to evade the discriminatory legislation. (en-US)
