Perlasca, Giorgio CercaDefinizione
Giorgio Perlasca was an Italian businessman and diplomat who protected Hungarian Jews in German-occupied Budapest from November 1944 to January 1945, saving an estimated 3,500. After the fall of the Fascist government and the armistice in Italy in September 1943, Italian nationals in Hungary were required to return to Italy but Perlasca refused and in 1944 applied for a position in the Spanish embassy in Budapest. He was given the task of placing Jews in safe houses under Spanish jurisdiction and also issued protective passes through the Spanish embassy. After the leaders of the embassy had returned to Spain, Perlasca changed his first name to Jorge and continued his rescue work as the new head of the embassy. He also worked with Raoul Wallenberg and the Swedish delegation and the IRC. Perlasca passed away in Padua, Italy, in August 1992. (en-US)
