Guiseppe Nicolini, the Bishop of Assisi, oversaw the rescue and aid of Jews who had fled to Assisi after the German occupation of northern and central Italy in September 1943. Along with Rufino Nicacci, the head of the San Damiano monastery, Bishop Nicolini helped approximately 300 Jews to obtain false identity papers or to find hiding places in local homes and monasteries. For his rescue efforts, Nicolini was recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations. (en-US)
