Definizione
Twins incarcerated in Nazi concentration camps for the purposes of medical experimentation. In Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkeneu, these experiments were the primary research undertaking of Dr. Josef Mengele. Four units were established for this purpose -- one in the general SS doctors unit , and one each in the Gypsy camp, men's camp, and women's camp. During intake into Auschwitz, twins were given a special number sequence for their prisoner tattoo that often incorporated the letters ZW (for "Zwillinge," German for "twin"). (en-US)
