Primo Levi was born in Turin, Italy, on July 31, 1919. During World War II Levi, an Italian Jew, was arrested in Northern Italy while trying to join the resistance movement. He was sent to Auschwitz. Levi discusses his wartime experiences in such books as Se questo è un uomo (If This is a Man or Survival in Auschwitz), La tregua (The Truce or The Reawakening), and I sommersi e i salvati (The Drowned and the Saved). Primo Levi died in Turin on April 11, 1987. (en-US)
