Definition:
The French Red Cross was formed in 1864 predominantly through the efforts of Henri Jean Dunant. It was officially recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1907. In August 1940 the French Red Cross Society was formed through the union of three Red Cross societies: Secours aux Blessés Militaires (Society for the Relief of the Military Wounded), Union des Femmes de France (Association of French Ladies) and Association des Dames de France (Union of Women in France).
