History:
The site of the ancient Persian Empire, Iran had been an independent kingdom since the establishment of the Safavid Dynasty in 1502. Great Britain and Russia competed for influence in Iran when oil was discovered in the early 20th century. In 1921, Rheza Khan established a military dictatorship and became shah in 1925. British, U.S. and Soviet forces occupied Iran in 1941 and its independence was guaranteed at the 1943 Tehran conference. In 1979, revolutionary forces led by Ayatollah Khomeini took over the government, establishing an Islamic republic. In the 1980s, Iran fought a war with Iraq. In 1997, a more moderate Islamic government was established. (en-US)
