Definizione
A ceremony that marks the entrance of a Jewish youth into Jewish religious adulthood and communal life. The rites are performed upon the onset of physical maturity (age 13 for boys, age 12 for girls), after which a bar or bat mitzvah becomes fully responsible for taking on time-bound mitzvoth (commandments). These include, but are not limited to, major rituals such as laying the tefillin (phylacteries), being called to the Torah, being counted in a minyan (quorum for prayer), and establishing a Jewish family. At the ceremony, it is customary that the father of the bar or bat mitzvah pronounce the blessing known as "barukh sh'ptarani" (Blessed be He who has relieved me of the responsibility of this youth).
The preferred grammatical usage of bar and bat mitzvah is that of a status which is conferred upon an individual, i.e., "The young woman became a bat mitzvah in 1953." (en-US)
