Originally a political prison built by the czar in 1835, named after its location, Pawia (Peacock) street. The Nazis took over Pawiak on October 2, 1939 and used it as their principal Warsaw prison until July 23, 1944 when liquidation began due to approaching Russian troops. The liquidation of Pawiak was completed by August 21, 1944, with a final dispatch of 1400 men to Gross-Rosen and 400 women to Ravensbruck, while the rest of the inmates were methodically shot. Additionally, documents were destroyed and buildings blown up. Approximately 37,000 people were murdered in Pawiak prison during the German occupation. (en-US)
