(1882-1945) Ion Antonescu was born on June 15, 1882, in Pitesti, Romania. Antonescu served as chief of general staff in the Romanian government in 1934. From 1937 to 1938 he acted as minister of defense in the Romanian government. Antonescu became prime minister of Romania on September 4 or 5, 1940. While in power, he cooperated with the Iron Guard fascist movement. On June 19, 1941, Antonescu approved the confiscation of Jewish property, a coercive anti-Jewish community-wide tax, and the expulsion of 40,000 Jews. Antonescu also authorized an alliance with Germany and Italy. On June 22, 1941, during Antonescu's tenure as prime minister, Romania declared war against Russia. German and Romanian forces assumed control of Bessarabia, North Bukovina, and Transnistria. Antonescu authorized the Odessa massacre on November 23, 1941, resulting in the deaths of 25,000 to 30,000 Jews. He was ousted in a coup d'etat staged by King Michael in August 1944. On June 1, 1945, near Jilava, Ion Antonescu was executed as a war criminal by the Romanian government. (en-US)
