In March 1946, British authorities forced the Italians to detain the Aliyah Bet ships Dov Hos and Eliyahu Golomb in the La Spezia harbor. The refugees, many of them survivors, went on a hunger strike to appeal to world opinion and the British allowed the ships to sail to Palestine in May. (en-US)
