History:
Originally the site of Inca civilization in the northwest and nomadic hunting and fishing tribes in the south, Argentina was explored and colonized by the Spanish beginning wtih Vespucci's voyage of 1502. Part of the Spanish empire in South America, Argentina became independent in 1816. As a neutral country, Argentina was a destination for refugees fleeing Europe during WWII, although the Argentine government often denied entry to Jewish refugees. Argentina entered the war in March 1945 on the side of the Allies. (en-US)
