Born Yitzhak Yzernitsky, 1921, Rozinai, Poland. Shamir was a member of Betar in Warsaw. In 1935 Shamir immigrated to Palestine. Shamir joined the Irgun Tzeva'i Le'umi in 1937. By 1940 Shamir broke with the Irgun and joined forces with Avraham Stern in the Lohamei Herut Israel (Lehi; also known as the Stern Gang). From 1942 to 1946, Shamir directed the Lehi military campaign against the British authorities in Palestine. In 1948, he was arrested by the British authorities in Palestine and deported to Eritrea. From 1955 to 1965, Shamir worked for the Mossad. He joined the Herut party in 1969. In 1973, he was elected to the Knesset. Shamir was re-elected and named Speaker of the Knesset in 1977. Shamir was Foreign Minister from March, 1980, to October, 1986. When Menahem Begin resigned from office, Shamir served as Prime Minister from October 1983 to October 1984. From 1984 to 1986 Shamir served as Vice-Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs. From October 1986 to 1992, Shamir was Prime Minister of Israel. (en-US)
