Murmelstein, Dr. Benjamin CercaDefinizione
Definition:
Born 1905, Galicia, Austria-Hungary. Murmelstein was a rabbi in Vienna in 1923. In 1930, he was appointed lecturer at the Jewish Theological Teachers College (Juedisch-Theologische Lehranstalt) in Vienna. After the German annexation of Austria in 1938, Murmelstein became a member of board of the Vienna Jewish Community (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien). On January 28, 1942, Murmelstein was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto. He served as deputy Judenaeltester (head of the Jewish council) at Theresienstadt in January 1943. In December 1943, Murmelstein became chief Judenaeltester (Elder of the Jews). In May 1945, he was liberated from Theresienstadt. Murmelstein was arrested by the Czech authorities on charges of collaboration with the Germans in June 1945. He was released from Czech custody in December 1946. After he was released from incarceration, Murmelstein resettled in Rome, Italy. (en-US)
