Definizione
The Swedish Red Cross was established in 1865, one of the oldest Red Cross branches in Europe, and developed into one of Sweden's largest humanitarian and voluntary organizations. It joined the League of Red Cross societies in 1919. The Swedish Red Cross participated in rescue missions during the Holocaust, including the rescue of Scandinavian nationals from concentration camps and the Theresienstadt ghetto and the Swedish legation's rescue work in Budapest in 1944. Swedish Red Cross vice president Count Folke Bernadotte met with Heinrich Himmler to arrange the release of 14,000 female prisoners, 2000 of them Jewish, from the Ravensbrück concentration camp to Sweden in April 1945. After the war, the Swedish Red Cross provided aid for camp survivors who came to the refugee camps in Sweden. (en-US)
