The Girl Scout movement was established as the Girl Guides by Robert Baden-Powell in the United Kingdom in 1910 and directed by Baden-Powell's sister, Agnes. In 1917, the Girl Guides were directed by Baden-Powell's wife, Olave Soames and chapters for girls interested in scouting were established in Europe, Australia, South Africa, Asia, and the Americas after WWI. In 1928, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts was created as the international parent organization for Girl Scout and Girl Guide groups. (en-US)
