Born Karol Wojtyla on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland, John Paul II was studying Polish literature in Cracow when the war broke out. In 1942, determined to become a priest, he went into hiding at the archbishop's palace in Cracow. He was ordained in 1946. Twelve years later he was made auxiliary archbishop of Cracow, and in 1964 he was made archbishop. Three years later he was appointed cardinal. Elected pope on October 16, 1978, he became the first non-Italian pope in 456 years. On May 13, 1981, an attempt was made on his life. Throughout his papacy, John Paul II has upheld conservative Church teachings. (en-US)
