Nota d'ambito

Used when interviewees list reform Judaism as a religious identity on PIQs. Also used when interviewees discuss orthodox Judaism. For discussions of the Reform movement in Hungary, use "Neology." (en-US)

Definizione

Often referred to in a generic fashion, both on Pre-Interview Questionnaires under the category of Religious Identity, as well as in videotaped testimonies. In reference to the official movement of Reform Judaism: Reform Judaism emerged in response to the political and cultural conditions brought about by Emancipation (e.g., the end of legal and social ghettoization) in Central Europe. Its origins were in Germany. Its manifestations vary from place to place and change over time, but they all assert the legitimacy of change in Judaism and deny the eternal validity of any given formulation of Jewish belief or codification of Jewish law. The World Union for Progressive Judaism, founded in 1926, unites Reform congregations in 26 countries. (en-US)
