Definizione
The Anglo-American armed forces entered Italy via Sicily in the summer of 1943, leading to the overthrow of Mussolini. On September 8, 1943 the new prime minister Marshal Badoglio negotiated an armistice with the Anglo-American armed forces. The Germans then invaded and occupied the northern and central Italy, from the northern cities of Turin and Milan to Rome and to Trieste. Mussolini was freed from imprisonment and established as the head of a puppet regime in Salo. The former Italian occupation zones in Yugoslavia, Greece, and France, were also taken by the Germans.
