On April 19, a German military force enters the Warsaw ghetto in order to resume the death camp deportations. Armed Jewish resistance units fight back and the Germans are driven out of the ghetto. The uprising lasts until the end of May. During the fighting, more than 56,000 Jews are burned alive, shot, or rounded up and deported to Treblinka. The First Polish Division formed in the USSR begins operations against the Germans in early May. The last ghettos in the Lublin district are liquidated in July. (en-US)
