World War II ends on May 8, 1945. In 1946, a referendum to change Italy from a monarchy to a republic passes by a small margin. Italy signs a peace treaty in 1947 abandoning its colonies and ceding the Dodecanese Islands to Greece, the Istrian peninsula to Yugoslavia, and four small areas to France. About 4/5ths of the Jews of Italy survive, but thousands abandon the community and six thousand emigrate. (en-US)
