Coordinates: 41º54'N 12º30'E 1930 Province: Rome Region: Latium Capital of Italy, Rome province and region of Latium Site of Vatican city. Called the Eternal city, it is one of the richest cities in the world in history, and art; great cultural, religious and intellectual center. One of the oldest Jewish ghettos at Trastevere. During WWII Rome remainded virtually undamaged. It was taken by US troops on June 4, 1944. Its suburbs, however, were frequenly bombed during the 9 months of German occupation of the city, marked by the massacre of 335 Italian hostages in Ardeatine caves. (en-US)
