The cradle of the Italian Renaissance, Florence is one of the richest art cities in the world. In WWII it was badly damaged by air bombing and fighting. Most of the art treasures were spared, although many historic churches and palaces were hit and parts of its medieval quarters were destroyed. All the bridges across the Arno, except the Ponte Vecchio, were blown up and destroyed. (en-US)
