Definizione

The camp at Westerbork was originally formed as a center for legal and illegal Jewish refugees in October 1939. From 1940 until 1942 the camp fell under the supervision of the Dutch Ministry of Justice. Operation of the camp was taken over by the Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei (BdS) in the Netherlands on June 1, 1942 as a police detention and transit camp for Jews and Sinti/Roma ("Gypsy") prisoners. Between July 1942, and September 1944, over 100,000 inmates, including Anne Frank and her family, were deported to Auschwitz, Sobibór, Theresienstadt, and Bergen-Belsen. Only 909 prisoners remained when Westerbork was liberated on April 12, 1945 by Canadian troops. (en-US)
