Palmah CercaDefinizione
The Palmah (Pelugot Mahtz, Hebrew: assault companies) was formed by the Haganah leadership in May 1941. This military formation, under the direction of Yitzhak Sadeh, functioned as special commando units subordinate to the Haganah high command. The Palmah naval division was known as the Palyam. In June 1941, Palmah units A and B participated in the Allied invasion of Syria and Lebanon. By the end of World War II, Palmah units had expanded to an estimated 2,000 members divided into 11 companies stationed at kibbutzim throughout Palestine. In 1945 and 1946, the Palmah conducted a strategic military campaign against the British authorities in Palestine. The Palmah also coordinated Jewish immigration from Europe to Palestine. By 1947, the Palmah consisted of 5,000 members arranged in three brigades. The Palmah, under the command of Yigal Allon, played a vital role in the 1948 War of Independence. In May 1948 the Palmah units were integrated into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). (en-US)
