Definizione

Location: In the South Pacific Ocean, including the island state of Tasmania and the dependencies of the Norfolk Islands, the Christmas Islands, and the Keeling Islands. Capital city: Canberra History: The site of Aboriginal peoples, the Australian continent was first visited by the Portuguese in 1601 and explored by the Spanish, Dutch, and British. After Captain Cook's landing at Botany Bay in 1770, the British claimed Australia and established a settlement in 1788. The British developed farming, sheep raising, and gold mining in Australia and also used it as a penal colony. By 1829 Australia had become a British dependency. It became independent from Britain in 1901 and developed a liberal legislation. Australia fought on the Allied side in both WWI and WWII. Its population more than doubled after WWII when European refugees immigrated to Australia. (en-US)
